The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, International NGO Forum on Indonesian Development (INFID), and Indonesia Global Compact Network (IGCN), is holding a Regional Workshop on Business and Human Rights on 5-6 February 2018. This workshop is to enforce Multi-stakeholder cooperation in implementation of the United Nations Guiding Principles for Business and Human Rights in Southeast Asia, particularly Indonesia.

 

This Forum will serve as a Multi-Stakeholder Dialogue medium for networking, knowledge sharing and exchange of experience on business and human rights practices and the implementation of the United Nations Guiding Principles for Business and Human Rights. About 100 representatives from corporations, civil society organizations, trade unions, academics, and representatives of ASEAN governments are expected to attend this meeting.

 

Government and business representatives of ASEAN countries, especially Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, and Myanmar, and Singapore, are expected to share their commitment process in achieving the National Action Plan for Business & Human Rights. This is in line with the views of President of the Indonesia Global Compact Network, Mr. YW Junardy, "This Regional Workshop is a great opportunity for the business sector to participate and share best practices in Business & Human Rights, and get updates from regional region especially Southeast Asia."

 

Sugeng Bahagijo, Executive Director of INFID, stated that this multi-stakeholder workshop forum is another step forward from the Government of Indonesia, especially the Foreign Ministry, in cooperation with civil society groups, to gain input, and immediately drafting the Legal Framework for implementing the Business Guiding Principles & HAM. "Hopefully, after this meeting the Indonesian government can immediately formulate a strategic plan, together with other parties, to implement the UN Guiding Principles for Business and Human Rights." This workshop can also be a medium to bring together Government representatives involved in the development of RANs on Business & Human Rights, Civil Society Organizations that focus on issues of Business & Human Rights both locally and regionally, as well as business representatives and an access to mediation mechanisms for various parties. And can be also seen as a constructive program on how to advance the ongoing RAN process and the formulation of regional strategies on Corporate Social Responsibility and HR on the application of national and regional policy frameworks.
