‘Women’s Empowerment in the Workplace and Community’

Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs) are a set of principles for business offering guidance
on how to empower women in the workplace, marketplace and community. They were developed by United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) and the United Nations Global Compact (UN Global Compact) in 2010. In Indonesia, however, the awareness of empowerment of women in business is still low.

In August 2018, Indonesia Business Coalition for Women Empowerment (IBCWE), Indonesia Global Compact Network (IGCN) and UN Women launched a “Study on the Application of Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs) in Top 50 Companies in Indonesia”. According to the study, in general, companies in Indonesia have implemented initiatives to empower women in the workplace, marketplace and community, yet there is still a lot of work to be done - as the implemented initiatives are limited to government’s regulation, and for multinational companies, the headquarters’ policy.

UN Women, IGCN and IBCWE was also established a Women’s Empowerment Working Group with companies, academia and civil society organizations in order to raise awareness and promote corporate commitment to implement WEPs and address issues and concerns of practical business. Through this initiative we hope to focus on issues of business practice with multiā€stakeholders in Indonesia. Multiā€stakeholders dialogue series as one of the planned programs by Women’s Empowerment Working Group will provide a space for its members to share good practices and challenges in promoting gender equality and the empowerment of women.

‘Women’s Empowerment Working Group’ will conduct a sharing and learning themed ‘Women’s Empowerment in the Workplace and Community’.

Objectives:

  1. To raise awareness of stakeholders about women’s empowerment and gender equality in workplace and community
  2. To socialize WEPs to stakeholders
  3. To encourage stakeholders to implement WEPs in their workplace and community
